New mitten started!

March 14, 2007

I have started a new pair of mittens. I actually started them a few weeks ago, held a paus, and took up them again a week ago. The pattern is again, surprise surprise, a traditional Finnish pattern, but also known in Estonia and Gotland, Sweden. I’m using Isager Tvinni yarn and 2 mm dpns. They are for my teenage son, and my, he has huge hands!

As you can see, spring is about to arrive to Finland! I do really have to hurry up with the second mitten!

More about the pattern and the yarn on my blog The Yarn Nest. Click at the link in the sidebar and you get both posts on the mittens.

I’ve started my very first hand-dyed, handspun, handknit thrummed finger mitten. That’s a lot of crafting in uncharted waters! Here’s what the (Kool-Aid dyed) thrums look like so far.

Estonian Attempt

January 8, 2007

Here is my first attempt at the Estonian Mittens – from Estonian Knitting.  This is Hilja’s pattern.  The yarn is “dye your own” from Knit Picks fingering weight.  Since I had several skeins laying around, I decided to do some dyeing.   It started off a bit tricky, so I went up from 2.25 mm to a 2.5mm needle.  Not a big difference but I kept splitting the yarn with the 2.25mm.  I’m using the Magic Loop method only becuase I didn’t have any 2.5 in the dpns.   Seems to be working out well though…Estonian Mitten

Happy Knitting!!!
